How are tattoos viewed in South Korea?

Q. I'm from the states, but am stationed here in Korea on a military base. Yesterday I spent the day out in Seoul. It was hot, so I wore shorts, exposing two large tattoos that I have on my thigh and my calf. I did not notice anyone else with tattoos at all, which made me wonder if Koreans have negative opinions of tattoos. Do they? Is it worse if you're a female with tattoos, or do they think it's ok because I'm a foreigner?

A. Older Koreans see tattoos as a sign of being in the Korean mafia.

Younger Koreans (20s) see tattoos as cool.

If you're foreign you get a pass generally, although it's a bit uncommon to see women with large tattoos here.

What are the native girls in Hawaii like? Do they like white guys?
Q. There is a good possibility I will be stationed in Hawaii with the Army. I definitely look east-coast American ben affleck type. Will I stick out like a sore thumb there? I know Hawaii is a state, but the native islanders aren't caucasian. Are the girls there pretty? Honestly. And do they like white guys?

I know the pussycat dolls singer is from Hawaii and she's gorgeous. If she is any indication of what Hawaiian girls like, I'm quite pleased.

A. When topics like this come up most people here will try and sugar coat their responses. This is the truth, like it or hate it: Many, not all, locals are prejudice towards mainlanders, ESPECIALLY people in the military. It's mostly due to ignorance, like all racists, but beware that you most likely will face some sort of racism here. If you go out to the clubs and try to pick up on true local chicks (they're called local not "native") then be ready to fight a local dude or two or three. Many local men here have a "tough guy" complex and nothing pisses them off more than a fresh-off-the-boat mainlander showing up and trying to pick up on "their" girls. And if you're a) white and b) in the military, then you're just about everything a racist local hates. Again, not all locals are like this. There are many, many nice and intelligent locals that respect the military (like most Americans) and have no problem with mainlanders coming here to live. The type of guy that'll give you trouble is pretty easy to spot - usually ghetto-thuggish looking, bald head, thick-ass gold chain around their neck, usually pretty big and built, drives some kind of suped up truck with loud mufflers, and has tons of tattoos. When you see a guy wearing a shirt that says "go home haole", or "I grew here you flew here", then you've found a guy that hates you cause you're a white mainlander.

On to local girls. There are many, many different types here. The actual number of "islander" type girls - island girls with Hawaiian blood, or from Tonga, Samoa, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, etc. - are actually pretty low. You'll see them around but every girl isn't a true "islander" like what you may be thinking. The majority of local girls have a mixture of different Asian, and sometimes Caucasian blood in them. You'll find a lot mixed with Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Samoan, Caucasian, etc. Almost all of them have black hair, some have dark brown, but practically none are blonde. Their body types range from really skinny to enormous, and I'm talking ENORMOUS! I don't care where you're from on the mainland - you've never seen bigger women than what we have here. 5'-3", 250 - 300 lb women are common here. I'm originally from Seattle, and there I might see three or four women that big maybe once a month. Here, depending on where you are, you'll see five to ten a day. Don't believe me? Go to Costco or Walmart on a weekend. Not that I have a problem with it or care or anything, just saying. That's just the culture here, and a lot of them are born that way I guess. Either way it works out for them because they all have either a boyfriend or a husband . . . or a baby daddy.

Now don't get me wrong, I've seen some pretty freakin beautiful local girls, they just aren't everywhere. Most of the girls who move here from the mainland are hot, most of the young tourist girls are hot (they spend weeks getting in shape for their vacation to Hawaii), but only some of the true local chicks, in my opinion, are hot. The hottest local girls can be found on the beaches of Waikiki and in the Kahala and Kailua area (where the rich people live of course).

Local girls seem to be more into local guys, but it's not unusual to see them with white guys. You tend to see more of the Chinese/Korean/Japanese/Filipino mixed girls with them and not so many of the Hawaiian/Tongan/Micronesian/Samoans.

Basically don't come here thinking you've died and gone to heaven because you'll be rudely awakened. That is, of course, unless you're into fat chicks. When I moved here 11 years ago I thought there would be tanned, fit, hot-bodied, bikini clad babes EVERYWHERE. Boy oh boy was I wrong! Everyone talks about how hot southern California and Miami girls are, so you'd think the same would apply to Hawaii, especially Honolulu. Nope, not even close.

By-the-way, you won't really stick out like a sore thumb unless you go somewhere that's full of nothing but locals. If you're just out shopping at the mall or hanging out at the beach you'll be fine. Actually just stick to the more popular beaches and you'll be fine. There are some that locals consider "theirs".
