What's the significance of that painting? The one of a farmer with pitch fork and his wife looking at him?

Q. What's it called and what's its significance?
I have the feeling its iconic in some way. If yes than what?

A. American Gothic
by Grant Wood, 1930
Oil on beaverboard
74.3 62.4 cm, 29¼ 24½ in
Art Institute of Chicago

This painting of a stern-visaged, tight-lipped, nineteenth-century country couple posed in front of their pristine farmhouse has become not only one of the most reproduced images in American popular culture, it has also virtually become emblematic of the moral fiber and simple virtues for which America is said to stand. Painted by Grant Wood in 1930, American Gothic has been interpreted both as homage to the artist's Midwestern roots and as slyly witty commentary on American "family values." After winning an important prize in 1930, American Gothic quickly became, as Robert Hughes notes, "Along with the Mona Lisa and Whistler's Mother one of the three paintings that every American knows. One index of its fame is the number of variations run on it by cartoonists, illustrators, and advertisers. The couple in front of the house have become preppies, yuppies, hippies, Weathermen, pot growers, Ku Klux Klaners, jocks, operagoers, the Johnsons, the Reagans, the Carters, the Fords, the Nixons, the Clintons, and George Wallace with an elderly black lady." In the visual culture of the millennium, American Gothic remains the most potent and pervasive symbol of America's heartland mythology, as witnessed by its perpetual permeation into all areas of popular culture.

From
http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/American_Gothic
In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in Carpenter Gothic architecture in Eldon, Iowa. Wood decided to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." He recruited his sister Nan to model the woman, dressing her in a colonial print apron mimicking 19th century Americana. The man is modeled on Wood's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Wood entered the painting in a competition at the Art Institute of Chicago. The judges deemed it a "comic valentine," but a museum patron convinced them to award the painting the third medal and $300 cash prize. The patron also convinced the Art Institute to buy the painting, where it remains today. The image soon began to be reproduced in newspapers, first by the Chicago Evening Post and then in New York, Boston, Kansas City, and Indianapolis. However, Wood received a backlash when the image finally appeared in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Iowans were furious at their depiction as "pinched, grim-faced, puritanical Bible-thumpers". One farmwife threatened to bite Wood's ear off. Wood protested that he had not painted a caricature of Iowans but a depiction of Americans.

Art critics who had favorable opinions about the painting, such as Gertrude Stein and Christopher Morley, also assumed the painting was meant to be a satire of rural small-town life. It was thus seen as part of the trend towards increasingly critical depictions of rural America, along the lines of Sherwood Anderson's 1919 Winesburg, Ohio, Sinclair Lewis' 1920 Main Street, and Carl Van Vechten's The Tattooed Countess in literature. However, with the onset of the Great Depression, the painting came to be seen as a depiction of steadfast American pioneer spirit.

Lyrics similar to James Blunt's "You're beautiful"?

Q. About a one sided love, when you only meet him/her once. (or few times)

A. Different sound entirely, but Dire Straits' Tunnel of Love comes to mind...

Getting crazy on the waltzers- but it's that life that I choose
Sing about the six-blade, sing about the switchblade, and a torture tattoo
And I been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
And I don't know I'll be tonight but I'd always tell you where I am

In a screaming ring of faces- I seen her standing in the light
She had a ticket for the race, hey, just like me she was a victim of the night
I put my hand upon the lever, she said let it rock and let it roll
I had the one arm bandit fever- there was an arrow through my heart and my soul

And the big wheel keep on turning- neon burning- up above
And I'm just high on the world
Come on and take a low ride with me girl
On the tunnel of love

It's just the danger (danger) when you're riding at your own risk
She said you are the perfect stranger- she said baby let's keep it like this
Its just a cakewalk, twisting baby, step right up and say
Hey mister- give me two, give me two 'cause any two can play

And the big wheel keep on turning- neon burning- up above
And I'm just high on the world
Come on and take a low ride with me girl
On the tunnel of love

Well its been money for muscle another whirligig
Money for muscle another girl I dig
Another hustle just to make it big
And rockaway rockaway

And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we where kids
Oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we where kids

She took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
She put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss
And in the roar of dust and diesel- I stood and watched her walk away
I could have caught up with her easy enough, but something must have made me stay

And the big wheel keep on turning- neon burning- up above
And I'm just high on the world
Come on and take a low ride with me girl
On the tunnel of love

And now I'm searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
In any shooting gallery where promises are made
To rockaway rockaway from culler coats and Whitley bay out to rockaway

And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we where kids
Girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we where kids

Also.. Take it easy (love nothing) by Bright eyes

First with your hands, then with your mouth
A downpour of sweat, damp cotton clouds
I was a fool, you were my friend
We made it happen
You took off your clothes, left on the light
You stood there so brave, you used to be shy
Each feature improved, each movement refined
And eyes like a showroom

Now they're spreading out the blankets on the beach
Oh that weatherman's a liar, he said it'd be raining
But it's clear and blue as far as I can see

Left by the lamp, right next to the bed
On a cartoon cat pad she scratched with a pen
"Everything is as it's always been,
This never happened"

"Don't take it too bad, it's nothing you did
It's just once something dies, you can't make it live
You're a beautiful boy, you're a sweet little kid
But I am a woman"

So I laid back down, wrapped myself up in the sheet
And I must have looked like a ghost 'cause something frightened me
And since then I've been so good at vanishing

Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth
Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me
I should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free
And a little bit empty

No it isn't so hard to get close to me
There will be no arguments, we'll always agree
And I'll try and be kind when I ask you to leave
We'll both take it easy

But if you stay too long inside my memory
I will trap you in a song tied to a melody
And I'll keep you there so you can't bother me

Japanese Tattoo Meaning?

Q. I saw a woman wearing a tattoo on her foot with the characters for 'onna' in kanji and 'ru' in katakana, and I was wondering what it meant. I know that 'onna' means woman but I want to know the whole meaning of the tattoo.

A. 女

no meaning

if she is fluent in Japanese, it might mean "become to be girly"
they are not correct Japanese, but some young ppl add "ru" at the end of "noun"
it means "to verbify nouns"

Do Geishas have tattoos (Japanese body suit)? If not, what kind of Japanese women wear body suit tattoos?
Q. I would like to know what Japanese women adorn themselves with body suit tattoos, and would like some more information and resources. Please and thank you.

A. No, geisha never have tattoos! Tattoos like that I think would only be on members of the yakuza or young hip adults. The tradition type tattoos is Japanese are called "irezumi".

Tattooed women, Do you have any tattoos on your ankle/leg? If not then why? Is a sleeve better on arm or leg?

Q. This made me curious ever since I read someone else's similar questions. I have tattoos on each side of my ankle and just assumed that it never looked bad or bothered anyone, since I've gotten all compliments. I never understood though why people are saying that tattoos on the leg only look right on "certain" women who know how to pull off that look. What does that mean? I like the way a leg sleeve looks (a small one) + it can easily be concealed when needed. Also, why would anyone think it looks too masculine for a women to tattoo her leg.- Most guys I see have their arms & back, not their legs!
Thanks!

A. I have a tattoo on my ankle. It doesn't quite go all the way around and I do plan on finishing it, as well as getting one on my other ankle. For me, I would get my legs covered before my arms. It's easier to cover if you need to do so. I wear jeans most of the year anyway, so it would be less likely to fade.

To each their own. Put your tattoos where you want them, not where other people think they should be.

Tattoos in the military?

Q. My Husband went to MEPS today to enlist in Marine Corps. He has a tattoo that touches his collarbone only a little bit. They didn't disqualify him or at least not yet, they just took a bunch of pics of it and are going to send the pics somewhere to get approved. He wasn't able to swear in yet because of this. Instead he now has to go home and write a paper on what the meaning of the tattoo is and why he should still be able to enlist...This all really makes me mad. Does Army have strict rules like this? Will he probably still be able to get in? his tattoo has no vulgar meaning and it is not gang affiliated..

A. The regs on tattoo's typically change 2 or 3 times a year because nobody can ever agree. The military does have pretty strict rules on tattoo's though. A friend of my husbands tried to enlist and was flat out rejected because of his tattoo on his collar bone, even though it's nothing offensive. Some people have been denied because they have naked women, but are accepted once they're covered up in bathing suits.

The current USMC tattoo policy states no head or neck tattoo's, no sleeves that are seen below the cuff of PT shirt or tattoo's (or collection of tattoo's) that completely cover arms or legs. No tattoo that is sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-american, anti-social, gang related, or extremest group or organization related.

You have to abide by MEPS rules for now because he has to pass them before even being regulated by USMC regs.

The army regs are no, head, neck or face tattoo's above uniform (Class A shirt) collar, no offensive tats ANYWHERE on the body.

Essentially, the last authority on tats is MEPS, so regardless of which branch he goes into, he needs to play MEPS rules.

I want this tattoo, any inputs?
Q. http://by69.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cherry-blossom-lower-back-tattoo-for-girl.jpg
I also want to get in script "Love conquers all" across my chest
and I sunflower type thing on my foot.
I love tattoos and I have a high tolerance for pain.
The pain isn't an issue.

A. If you like the cherry tree, get it. It IS beautiful, though, as someone else has said, not very original. But then again, what IS original in tattoos? I've seen pics of everything from cat butts to dandelions to electricity posts and umbrellas.

What I wanna advise you AGAINST is the chest tattoo. I love tattoos, but NOT those. I feel that one of the best parts about a woman's body is her silky smooth chest and clavicle area. Don't ruin that natural beauty with some lame quote. Yes, everything HAS been done already but that "Love conquers all" thing... that's just TOO MUCH cliche. Almost as bad as the "girlfriend-boyfriend name" tattoo and the rose and the anchor. Quotes about love.

But hey, if you INSIST on getting that quote, at least do it somewhere else. Don't ruin your pretty chest with it.

Enlisting in the USMC and tattoo?

Q. So Ive looked around, but I haven't seen anyone in my situation, which is this:

I am currently 17, and going into my senior year of high school. After high school, I am looking to possibly go into the Marine Corps. I am really thinking about getting a tattoo on my chest of my family name sake in chinese kanji, backed by a dragon. The tattoo would be about 3"x3". However, my recruiter told me that because I have not yet gotten the tattoo, I should not get it until I have gone through boot camp. I have read up on the USMC's tattoo policy, and my tattoo would still fall in lines with it. It did not occur to me at the time to ask why I should wait, or if it would disqualify me for enlistment.

So my question is this:
Would getting a tattoo now, just about a year before I actually go off to boot camp, disqualify me from the Marine Corps? If not, is there a reason I should wait till after boot camp to get my tattoo?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A. The Marine tattoo policy has become really restrictive.

Any tattoo you get will require a waiver. Any tattoo. You would have to submit a waiver package that would include a digital photo, a written description from you, what the tattoo depicts and what it means to you. All tattoos are reviewed for: obscenities, drug use depiction, illegal activities, pornography, anti-patriotism... If your tattoo, IN ANY WAY, could be seen as fitting any of these you will be denied enlistment.

Your recruiter is concerned because you are possibly putting your eligibility to enlist into the hands of someone who might see your tattoo differently than you.

You won't be sneaking into bootcamp with a tattoo that hasn't been approved either. The General at Parris Island used to personally come to the initial IST with the approved tattoo waiver to verify the picture matched the actual tattoo. If any recruit showed up with a tattoo and no waiver; that was all bad.

You should save yourself the hassle and possible denial by waiting. While I was recruiting I put 293 young men & women into the Marine Corps, tattoos were always the most iffy waiver to get approved.

Best of luck to you.

What is the dumbest tattoo you have ever seen?

Q. Either in person or online?

I saw a girl with a huge Hello Kitty tattoo on her chest at Hot Topic today. I thought that was pretty stupid :/ I wonder what she's gonna look like when she's 80 years old...

A. Oh i've seen so many funny, dumb and unnecessary tattoos!

i think the funniest one was when i saw an eldery woman (80-85) , with a tattoo that said 'forever young' with hearts around it, on her arm. it was pretty ironic.

and online i saw a lady who got a website name tattoo on her forehead. she got paid $10,000! and she did it so she could get her kids through school.. haha!

Q. well at the moment i have 2 tattoos but there always been this big taboo with tattood women im having the rest of 1 finished off next week along with stars coming from just behind my ear coming a little bit down my neck the meaning for me is my little sister as my lucky star

A. art work was started by ancient egyptians. their canvas was women's body's. this does include cleopatra. males started receiving bad work late 1800s. women with art are making a very positive impress on with employers. first impression this woman has confidence in her self. does not make rash decisions. has respect for herself as well as others. art work is meant for women. it is a issue with the vast majority of Society . simple solution. these macho morons should have four words tattooed on their forehead. LEARN TO RESPECT WOMEN. in my sixties. disrespect to women is at its all time low. the verbal abuse in public causes a old guy to go ballistic. what i fail to understand the words to a small woman. are not used against a antique aged guy. your art work will add beauty. i have art signifies respect women. family member plays national football league. san diegochargers identical piece. stay strong. old people have a word balderdash. it means anything you want it to. to those who disrespect women. guess what it means.

Do you think this could work as a tattoo idea?
Q. I want to get a tattoo for both sets of grandparents, and I want it to be one tattoo, not two, to show that they are one and not seperated. For one side, I want to get a sled, for all of the times in their backyard. For the other, a bar stool--they owned and lived over a bar. I want flowers surrounding/as the backdrop. Do you think an artist could find a way to make these two things that don't go together GO TOGETHER in one cohesive piece? I think if they could pull it off it would really be awesome.

A. Many women choose the rainbow toned butterfly. The colors can be placed in many different hues. They can be done in two color sets, three, four, and five or higher. A popular choice is purple, violet, green, light blue, pink, and yellow. If your tattoo artist is good, this tattoo looks great on the skin. The sizes can vary, but I would prefer 3inch by 3inch design. But, the ending choice is yours. They don't look right with 5 colors that small, but two will work for those of you that prefer a smaller tattoo.

Is it wise get a tattoo before switching branches?

Q. I want to get a tattoo, and active in the military at the moment. I plan to switch branches when my ETS comes near. Is it a good idea to get a tattoo before I switch? It will be on my forearm. I never had a tattoo so I'm really thinking about it.
Branch will be Navy.

A. So you want to get a tattoo...why? Do you think it makes you an individual or somehow a "rebel?"

Consider this - there are 47 MILLION Americans who are now tattooed. You can get your tattoo and compare it to the brand-new tats I see on women in their 70s and 80s. Sure makes them look tough and rebellious.

Be a real rebel...do NOT get a tattoo before switching services if you are too much of a mindless zombie not to get tattooed at all. Get the tat and risk switching services .

Whatever happened to individuals who wanted to be NON-conformists?

Why do people get tattoos?
Q. Why do people get tattoos?
Tattoos, ear piercings, implants.. modification... why do people modify and tattoo themselves when it is not only imaginably extremely painful but financially costly too?
Here are some of the most well known modified people in the world:
Rick. Whos aim is to appear as a zombie. So far, more than 24 hours worth of tattoos --costing over $4,075 Canadian dollars
Dennis Avner, aka "Catman" , he has undergone extensive surgery - Tattoos, implants, teeth filing and shaping.
Julia Gnuse, aka illustrated lady, was born with a condition that causes her skin to blister regularly and scar. She used tattoos to cover this up. After 10 years she made it into a Guinness Record as worldwide most tattooed woman.
Tom Leppard, 73 years old has £5,500 worth of leopard spot tattoos covering his body.
Eric Sprague known as the Lizardman was one of the first people to have a split tongue .
The winner in multi-layered tattooing is Lucky Diamond Rich, who has taken 1,000 hours having his body modified.
The Guinness World Records most pierced woman Elaine Davidson. In 2002 she had 462 piercings, with 192 on her face alone. In 2005 there were 3,950, reported at the Edinburgh festival. Her genitalia area having the most - 500. The total weight is estimated at 3 kilograms. In May 2008 Davidson's piercings totalled at 5,920 and Feb 2009 at 6,005.

Etienne Dumont is an art & culture critic and is covered head to toe in tattoos. He also has silicon implants and, 2.7 inch rings in each earlobe and plexiglass piercings through the nose and bottom lip.
Here you can see this unknown Brazilian man has some heavy tentacle suction-cup implants
These are some of the most extreme examples of tattoos and modifications ever known but the world is filled with everyday people sporadically or regularly visiting tattoo parlours as just a standard routine

A. because they are awesome xD i love tattoos and piercings people that don't like them its as simple as this don't get them , people that do like them get them !!! for me its a turn on when a guy has tattoos and piercings >.<

People living in Japan - Will a Small Tattoo affect me living and working in japan?

Q. I'm going to get a Small tattoo on the INSIDE of my ankle,
It's going to be a small dog paw print outline.

Me and my friend are going to go travel and work around Asia for a year, and this includes Japan.

I've read some places where it say Japanese are completely against tattoos (as they connect it to Yankees), and other places saying people are more interested in tattoos and wont mind. Also the placing I thought was a good idea was it not in your face but at the same time it would be hard to hide if I wasnt wearing socks :/

So I was wandering would people see such as small tattoo as a problem?
Also if I could speak Japanese (as Im currently learning) and I saw people staring if I was to start a conversation up with them in Japanese would it make them feel at ease?

So it will kind of look like this: Except only one paw print.
http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&biw=1024&bih=481&tbm=isch&tbnid=vRr-0EQuZohgbM:&imgrefurl=http://www.tattoodonkey.com/paw-print-tattoo/18/&docid=h0jnVeke_o52jM&imgurl=http://www.inskin.ltd.uk/_images/gallery/C%252520-%252520Web03.jpg&w=600&h=450&ei=GJQVUO_cC6HX0QX99YCADg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=722&vpy=114&dur=49&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=198&ty=82&sig=104728149556918038301&page=5&tbnh=133&tbnw=166&start=58&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:58,i:288
ops said Yankees instead of yakuza my bad, Sorry about that
OK well this I why I asked this question because I seem to be reading mix reviews.
Im a bit confused.

So in the eyes of public it wouldnt be a matter say if I was to wear flip flops or sandals?
But in the eyes of employment it would matter would it matter if I was to get a job at a café or as a translator? (I know being a translator would be extremely hard but Im trying to think of an example job, as Im guessing if you were to become an English teacher it would matter?).

A. Japanese are against tattoos because of the yakuza (mafia) affiliation, not because they don't like "yankees."
However, that doesn't mean that Japanese who aren't in the mafia don't get tattoos. I know of a Japanese girl who plans on getting a tattoo soon and she is very girly and from the country. Times are changing.

No one is going to care about a tiny ankle tattoo. Your boss isn't going to inspect your body from head to toe to make sure you look perfect, and it's not like you won't be wearing socks/pants when working in Japan. (Unless you're a lifeguard I honestly cannot think of any job in Japan where I've seen women without socks on.) If you're worried then just cover it with make-up. Sometimes bath houses can be fickle about it but if you have it covered then no one is going to care. Japanese who have tiny tattoos do the same thing.

But as you're just walking around the country in sandals no one is going to stare or even notice your feet unless they have a foot fetish. It's not like Japanese are so adversed to or shocked by tattoos that the mere sight of one makes them have panic attacks and a paw print is not going to be mistake for any gang connections.

Although, honestly, I think people would feel more panicked if you came up to chit-chat with them out of the blue, regardless of if you were staring at them or not. Japanese don't often strike up conversations with strangers like what happens in the West.

Also, you should know that the Japanese opinions surrounding tattoos are common in all Asian countries. People with mafia affiliations have tattoos. It stems from Buddhism where you are not supposed to disrespect your body by marring it in any way (a lot of girls don't even have their ears pierced because of this) so tattoos have always had a bad rap in Asia.

Tattooed women in Japan?
Q. So I really would like to go to Japan but I'm not sure how accepting they are with women with tattoos. I have a chest tattoo and others along my arm and wrists. Would I not be able to go swimming at all there or do any certain things? What about wearing a shirt that shows off my chest? Do Japanese men not like women with tattoos? Thanks

A. You're not going to like my answer, but here's the truth. Tattoos of any size on a woman are uncommon. In some places only hookers have them. Even men with tattoos are seen as connected with the Yakuza, Japan's largest criminal organization.
Your tattoos will prevent you from going into most public swimming pools, baths and onsens.
The Japanese men I've known didn't like tattoos period.

I want 2 tattoos but where?

Q. So i got two quotes that i want a tattoo of...

The first one i want is virtically going down the sides of my torso:
on one side: "Don't be afraid your life will end;"
on the other: "be afraid that it will never begin."

but i also want...

"A women should be two things: classy and fabulous -coco chanel"

but i dont know if i should get that instead of some where else? and like where if somewhere else?

i dont know what are opinions?

A. Please don't, so many people ink up these days it's really more of a statement to refrain.

What else to put with chest piece?
Q. i was thinking of getting "Greed" under one of my collar bones and the "Lust" under the other. but i don't know if i should put something else to go with each word (should i just put the lettering then have pictures/sayings below it). I was going to stuff that go with Greed on one side my torso then the other be stuff that goes with Lust. I'm tall and have really broad shoulders with an athletic build so i think you would look really good plus i have like a good skin tone for colorful tattoos.
I'm a guy:( idk if I want to get it now if it's going to be viewed as femine tattoo. I really liked that idea

A. i think thats a good idea(:
Just remember, having GREED, and LUST will be on you forever,
if you have kids.. or when youre a old woman that may be awkward. just a heads up(:

what tribal tattoos represent strength?

Q. i want something to represent strength and what ive been through
i like
the word strength on my wrist
a white tiger on my lower back
or a tribal sign
i dont know which but it will be my frist tattoo
and if you can think of one tell me where :)

A. Can't you be strong without getting it emblazoned on your body?
The strongest are those that have been through some kind of hell but don't go on about it much.
It has to be said that tattoos are different on women than men, and tribal tattoos are butch.
The only tribal tattoos for women I know of are the 'Moko' where Maori women got a design below their lower lip. Is that a look that appeals? [I think you're supposed to be a Maori anyway].
Also, it jars when people get tribal tattoos and representational ones.
Be strong. Get something discreet.

Can men get the love life loyalty tattoo?
Q. I have seen the tattoo and like the idea of symbol representing love life and loyalty but it looks girly?

also does anyone no any websites that have symbols with meanings? and tattoo like the above

For anyone who doesn't know what this tattoo looks like click the link below:

A. hi. i have seen this on both men & women. the photo u used as an example is on a man, women don't have those muscles, lol. i think it looks good on a man. the meaning is heart shape signifies love & loyalty and the ankh signifies life. there is also a maori symbol for love, life & loyalty but it is a very condensed larger tattoo. look at some of the photos of The ROCK, he has one that is similar. hope this helps! love, kelli

Where to put temp tattoo for special occasion?

Q. Where is the sexiest place to put a tattoo on a woman's body. Would like to get a temporary tattoo for a special occasion (for my man.) What designs are really sexy? Ideas please -- since it'll be temp, over the top is fine.

A. I would go for somewhere hidden from public view, like low on your hip, or maybe on your chest underneath your bra. As for tattoo ideas, you could go with the traditional rose or butterfly. Or you could do a pin-up girl, but I'd put that on your thigh or ribs for maximum inpact.

Since it's temp, and it sounds like you don't have any real ones, anything will be a shock when he comes across it.

Good luck!

Most painful areas for tattoos on women?!?
Q. Okay well I have been thinking for awhile of getting a tattoo but I want it in a place that isn't showy and I want a small or medium sized one, nothing flashy. Here are what I have narrowed down to:

_star & music note linked behind my ear.
_a horizontally shaped tattoo ( design not decided ) in the front of my hip bone a little lower in the area that would be hidden by pants not by underwear.

Which would be more painful? & Which would be less visible? & Does anyone have any ideas for a design towards my hip bone? Thanks everyone & please only serious answers.

A. My friend has one behind her ear and she said it hurt like hell, and I got one on each hip recently and was completely fine (I even fell asleep for a little bit hehe). Only a few small parts hurt because they were over my hip bone slightly, but other than that it actually tickled and made me LAUGH.

so yes, I would say hips :D
- it seems to be less painful
- easier to hide

mine?

wanting a tattoo just cant find someone to draw it out for me?

Q. I want 3 of them
one that a girl is chained to a wall with tattered angel wings that is rather dark

the next one I want it to be the angel girl to be free
still in the same place but more lit up
her wings to be beautiful and I want her to look full of life the chains that were around her I want the to be laying on the ground around her

the last one
I know what I want but at the same time I Dont
I want it to be a girl that is in love
and was loved back at one point
however the love was taken away from her
so she is left alone waiting for a love that will never return

Where can I find someone to draw them up first
the tattoo artist I am talking to asked me to find someone to draw them because he dont want to mess it up
he is a really good artist he just cant draw from scratch

where can I find someone to draw them for me???

and where would you have them placed?

A. Sorry, but I call bullshit on your "really good artist"s skills. A tattooer who can't draw an angel? Please! Do yourself a favour buddy, and forget about this joker. If he can't draw an angel or a woman, how is he going to tattoo them? it's not as simple as follow the lines.

Go find yourself a proper custom artist, who knows what they're doing. Not clowns like that guy. If you can't draw, you can't tattoo. I hate to generalise, but there is NEVER an exception to that rule. And your tattoo needs to be drawn by a tattooer, you can't replicate everything you see on paper on skin. Plus, with custom pieces, they should be drawn from a tattooers perspective, with the lines and contours of the body part the tattoo is being done on.

If you want drop me a line and let me know whereabouts you are, I will try point you in the direction of a proper custom tattooer who can do justice to your designs, and give you some real artwork.

ANSWERS BY WOMEN ONLY please!! I need to know...?
Q. I get a lot of attention whenever I get mad and show aggression. I have a nice lean muscular body and a couple of tattoos on my arms, but you all seem to get aroused when I become aggressive and angry. Are all of you insane?

A. I think anyone that found a joker like u would be insane. You dont sound all intense and strong and moody like you're trying to.

You just sound sad and weak and needy to be honest! Maybe you're trying to sound like the kind of man you wish u were,I dont know.A few people I know just read your question and fell around laughing.

Dont try so hard, now be a good little man and go have a game of chess or something...oooh and dont get mad PLLLeeeaaase!!! we'd all be scared (and yurned on of course!)hahahahahahaha

Women with tattoos?

Q. You like your tats, regret them, want more? Guys what do you think of ladies with tats on the forearms, arms, legs, neck, back ect. This inetersting topic came up not too long ago...so Id like to here your take

I have tats n love em!
im loving these answers......keep em coming!

A. i currently don't have any, but i want one. the thing is, i think a tattoo should be more than just a decoration, it should have meaning to you.

my best friend has a tattoo of a winged unicorn on her hip. no one ever sees it unless she decides to show it to them. it is something just for her. it reminds her of her childhood, and our obsession with "unipegasus" when we were little.

tattoos can be very sexy and beautiful, but only if there is actual meaning behind it. otherwise, its just tacky.

Tattoos on women?
Q. What do people (guys and other girls) think about girls with tattoos? I'm not talking about the cool tattoos people get and regret for a lifetime but really meaningful and not too big or cliché ones. Is it okay, does it bother you too much? Would you find a girl less sexy or good-looking just because she has a tattoo?

A. I've seen a lot of very pretty stunning women and then i see they have big back, full sleeves, chest, full leg tattoo's and my first thought is "Your such a pretty girl why would you do this to yourself"

I LOVE LOVE LOVE small meaningful tatoo's on women. I think they look really nice and sexy on....

Back of the neck
Wrist
Ankle
Foot
Back of the ear

I love words or sayings on girls not so much into big pictures.

I need help with a first tattoo...?

Q. My Dad passed away towards the end of last year and I was looking to get a tattoo in memory of him. I have never had a tattoo before and know nothing about them so i'm looking for a little help. Firstly i'm a male, are "RIP" or "In memory of" tattoos popular with men and women equally? (Are they deemed feminine?) Also, where should I have the tattoo drawn on my body? Any links to designs for inspiration would be helpful as well as alternative messages i can have written on the tattoo other than simply RIP etc.

A. I recommend you to try http://www.createmytattoo.com for your tattoo. This is a cool place. I personally tried CreateMyTattoo for my tattoo design and I am completely blown away by the design that I got from CreateMyTattoo.com The artist captured exactly what I wanted.

Can pregnant women get tattoos?
Q. What, if any, are the risks?
Please, if you can, leave a website or something that you got it from, but if you can't that's cool.
Thank you in advance!

A. I don't have a website link, but I asked my doctor about this about a month ago (I was 29 weeks pregnant at the time) and she recommended that I hold out until after the baby is born, your blood is thinner when you are pregnant, which can lead to more bleeding during the actual tattoo process, not to mention that your body is completely whacked due to hormones and it could heighten the risk of infection. Also, the hormones can cause color variations in the dye used to tattoo because of these hormones, ex: pink turning bright orange.. etc..

Its only 9 months.. I think ill hold out. Just think, maybe your new baby will be an inspiration for a special tattoo

tattoo idea * ?

Q. so i want it on the bottom of my foot or maybe somewhere else yet im not sure.. but heres what i want .. in script

"it's me who is my enemy, me who beats me up, me who makes the monsters, me who stoops my confidence"

- "you washed away the best of me and you dont care"

- you cant turn back, because this road is all youll ever have

or

"who are you to judge the life i live"

which one of those quotes do you like most

A. I'm sorry, but I've got to say, that your quotes are all completely negative and I can't see how having them tattooed on you would do you a bit of good.
All that I can see is that you in the 1st one, don't like yourself very much and that you are pretty sure that you'll never treat yourself good.
The 2nd one is totally aimed at a specific person(s) and sounds like a teenager stomping their feet, crossing their arms, and blaming others for whatever state that they are in and trying to shame them for mistreatment and lack of care.
3rd one is fatalistic, showing no belief in change, or any positive addition or any 'surprise' element in your future.
and the 4th one is spitefully spitting in anyones face who may try to challenge you or your thoughts or stand on anything.

So, unless your planning on a bleak drudging life where no one cares for you and no one likes you, .. I'd advise against all of these.

May I offer a different idea? Why not get a tattoo that shows that you at least entertain the idea that 'anything is possible', 'that you are optimistic about your future', that you can 'drop the baggage of the past' and that you can 'go naked and free into your future' ...????
And no I do not mean for you to get any words at all as a tattoo, but something that reminds you of these things, that makes you smile and relax and look forward to tomorrow. A little belief in magic, if you will. Maybe even something silly, or sweet, or something that shows newness and growth...

If you must have words, how about these - from "Illusions, The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah:
"Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours."
"There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts. "
"Here is a test to find whether your mission on earth is finished: If you're alive, it isn't."

Well, I just had to try! I hope you don't do the 'doom and gloom' idea, and if you do, I hope that you find a really good sense of humor!
good luck to you~

Wrist tattoo ideas for women?
Q. I'm getting my first tattoo and I want to get it on my wrist. I am getting it to reward myself for graduating and getting my associates. I have been looking at pictures online but I haven't found any that I am really in love with.
I have been thinking about getting some sort of saying with just a couple words, like "Just a Girl" or even just one word like "Hope", I also like the idea of simple little birds, i've been seeing quite a few of those tattoos and thought they were cute plus i thought they would be a good symbol of moving on and being free.
I really need some more ideas of what to get, I have looked at the questions and answers that other people have posted that are similar to mine but I want to find something unique, if you could help me out that would be great.
Thanks!

A. You want to "reward" yourself by permanently altering your appearance in a negative way that will forever affect the way people view you? I suggest you do not get a tattoo. A tattoo is little better than a cartoonyou cant get a good quality drawing on the human skin. It will deface your body like ugly graffiti defaces a public building. There is a big cost to getting a tattoo, and it is far more than wasted money. The true cost of a tattoo is a lifetime of regret. Most regret it within 5 years. There is an 80% chance you will regret it in your lifetime. The regret starts after you start to notice how people react to you. Some will look at you with disgust, for tattoos are offensive to many, many people. There are serious practical reasons not to get tattooed. Your chances of getting a good job will be greatly diminishedmost companies will not hire you since your tattoo will be seen as offensive to other workers. The majority of people get tattooed when young and their decision making process is not yet matured. Youth tends to be impulsive. Young people are still developing and they need to be very careful in making important, permanent decisions. The reason young people get tattooed is for reasons that are not mature (i.e. they want people to notice them, they want to pretentiously honor someone, they are rebelling against their parents or society, they are conforming to what they think are social norms, they are unable to see ahead and view the negative results of their actions, etc.) In a large sense, nothing illustrates the degeneration of western culture more than the entertainment industry encouraging impulsive youth to permanently disfigure themselves in order to express themselves. But such is the power of suggestion that more and more young people are buying into this Hollywood lie that tattoos are a cutting edge way to express yourself. But that is so not true. You should express yourself with your words and actions, not by inking graffiti onto your living flesh. The message you will actually convey with a tattoo is I am foolish, I make bad decisions, I have no sense of right and wrong, I follow any fad at any cost and I am unemployable. If you want to see the true level of cultural development for tattoos and other body modifications, look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwOXCmjTsvs I am telling you this because I care about you and I want to help you. Good luck to you in your life. But do not get tattooed. Tattoos are permanent. You can not take them back.

Copyright tattoo design?
Q. Well I see so many people go online, find someone else's tattoo, and then decide to go get it inked on themselves. I for one think this is horrible, and then I began to wonder about the possibility of it happening to me...
Anyone have any idea if it would be possible to copyright my tattoo design so that anyone else that ever got it inked on them self could be prosecuted?
It may sound silly to some, but Im sure some of you that have custom pieces will understand. So anyone got any information on this?
Tori- I believe your one of those individuals who I figured would not understand what I was talking about.

Courtney- Ever done any art yourself? Every have it simply copied by someone else?
There's a difference between someone having something similar, someone having something in the same style, and someone simply coping your idea.

A. There is a woman named Angel- she was the first person (that anybody knows about) to get "life sized" angel wings on her back. She has the design copyrighted and can sue anyone who gets her exact wings tattooed on them. The only issue is ANY change makes the design different and therefore unprotected- thus like 6 million people are walking around with angel wings these days.

Basically the problem is the people who were getting tattooed BMI (Before Miami Ink) were interested in being different and original- now people come on Answers to ask what they should get- just another expression of their clone-like tendencies.

All my pieces are custom and many of them were drawn and redrawn and nit picked till I was sure they were perfect- If someone wants a "basic" design there are many flash companies out there waiting to sell them what they want- but to be so lame as to steal MY design- MY idea- one that they in no way are gonna me pay for- That just sucks.

Women with chest pieces / chest tattoos, what's your job?

Q. Many people say that getting a chest piece is a sure way to not get a good job in life. I am wondering what jobs women who have chest pieces have and whether you have to cover it up or not.
Edit: I'm aware that most chest pieces can be covered up. I'm just curious to know what jobs some women with them have even if they are covered up (like the teacher one for example).

A. The only place that I have see visible chest tattoos on women are on women who work in tattoo shops and some retail places like Hot Topic and Spencers

Not that I have anything against them, that is where I've seen chest tattoos.

Women with sternum tattoos?
Q. I was considering getting a tattoo on my sternum-and I was just wondering (for females that have done this) how different is the healing process? I know it hurts more than an armband-just because there is less flesh over the sternum. Does it take alot longer to heal? My arm took about 3 weeks.. And also-what kind of bras did you initally wear, and what did you wear to get it done? Any info would help!
Okay-look, I am going to get tattoos where ever I please, I am not taking any opinions on how that is 'gross' or an 'abomination' or whathaveyou. I don't push my spiritual views on anyone, and don't really care about anyone else's. I have no intentions of showing my chest to whoever passes me by-believe it or not, most people tattoo for THEMSELVES. If someone does body art for popularity's sake or otherwise-that's their biz. No one knows I have as many as I do, because I get them for me-not to show off.

All I want are the facts from people that have had this done, and their healing times.

A. okay, my husband has a sternum tattoo and it all depends on how fast your body heals but generally the closer a tattoo is to the heart the faster it will heal because there is more blood flow to that area. i haven't had a sternum tattoo but i am working on a full back piece so i can give some bra advice. usually when i get worked on for the first five days or so i put on a t-shirt THEN whatever bra i am going to wear (preferably a somewhat lose and comfortable one- if you can call a bra comfortable) then whatever shirt i am going to wear. that way the under shirt is touching the tattoo and the bra won't rub it in certain spots it DEFINITELY made a difference in my comfort level thruout the day at work and stuff. good luck!!!
