Q. I have been wanting to get a tattoo with my kids names somehow incorporated into a picture.....They are boys, 7 and 10 years old. I like dragonflies, mushrooms, lizards, flowers. They like dragons, flames, motorcycles and snakes. I only want a small to medium tattoo and we cannot reach any agreement. It's going to be on my body, but I want it to have meaning, and want them to be involved in the decision. Anybody have any good ideas?

Then sit down with your kids and come up with something together. Use a motif that you nor them will ever tire of, these include: plants, planets and stars, elements (not like uranium!), things of that nature.
In my opinion, no one should get portraits, tribal, or any disney character! But that's my opinion, take it or leave it.

A. As far as the danger goes, the only place that is NOT a good idea is on your head, as there can be a LOT of bleeding. Another bad place: the hands and feet. The skin on these places sheds and regrows so fast that the tattoos fade quickly- but not dangerous. Otherwise, if you talk to a tattoo artist, they will be able to tell you the risks of getting it where.

The pain involved with a tattoo depends on the person, but generally anywhere that it is over bone with no fat or muscle (ie ankle, tailbone, shoulder blade, spine!) really hurts. Also, places where the skin is naturally soft and tender- wrists, forearms, armpit, ankles, inside thighs- all hurt.

I've known girls who have passed out fom getting the "tramp stamp" on their lower back, and also guys who've been reduced to tears when getting inked on their ribs. Other people sit with a smile and read a magazine.

Since you are so young, it is not likely that you will get a licensed tattoo artist to do this for you- and maybe not even with a parents' consent! Many artists are bound by the rules of the parlor they work for. I would not advise going to a "garage artist" or a friend of a friend who happens to have a tattoo gun. This is how AIDS and Hep. C get spread!

My advice is try Henna. It is a strong dye made from plants, and comes from India. It takes a little practice to use it right, but you can get some stellar effects with it. It stays on for 3-6 months, and fades after that. Women in India get their hands and feet decorated in it before their weddings, and it can look just as good (if not better) than real tattoos!

A. First, don't let anyone sway your opinion on if you want a lower back tattoo. They were around long before the term "tramp stamp" was invented, and they'll be around long after people ask "what's a tramp stamp?". If that's what you want, then go for it!

Second, seeing as to how tattoos are forever, make it something meaningful, or something that you will enjoy for the rest of your life. Remember that likes and dislikes will change a lot over your life (especially in the next 5 years of your life), so when you make your decision, make sure that it won't be something you'll hate later on in life, such as lyrics from a band you can't remember 20 years from now ^_~ (however, if it's meaningful lyrics, or from your 'all time favorite band', then consider it [ex: I would be happy with the lyrics from Metallica's Fade to Black, but I'd kick myself if I had Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby]).

Likewise, if you choose some picture of some sort, unless you plan to have a 'child-like playfulness' about you your entire life, I would avoid any sort of child-like imagery (if fate should have it that, at 80, you're a bitter old woman, you will hate the lollipop tattoo on your ankle), or conversely, anything too 'extreme' from your 'average self' (if at 80 you're a kid-at-heart, the tattoo that reminds you to take the "safe route" might become too stuffy for you).

For something meaningful, consider your own personality traits. If you think of yourself as being courageous, pick a lion. If you're cute, pick a puppy or a ribbon. If you love stargazing, pick celestial figures. If you're religious, pick your favorite passage from your (insert appropriate book here), or an icon from your favorite story. If you take pride in your heritage, pick a pattern based off that heritage... and so on.

If you want something purely artistic but simple, some suggestions: a shower of stars, a rainbow ending in a cloud, butterflies (consider natural butterflies as well, as they are just as vivid in nature as our own imaginations), frogs, geckos, vines, flowers, leaves, small birds, owls, or smiley face with "Have A Nice Day" (or maybe a pirate happy face with "Have A Piratey Day, ARRR!", or some other theme like that).

Most tattoo shops will have flash (common tattoo images) on their walls for you to look at, so if no ideas here satisfy what you want, check out their flash, and see if you can't work with your artist to come up with something that's "uniquely you".

A. Have someone with excellent handwriting write it in cursive. I find women have much better handwriting than me. Use that, it looks better than some microsoft font or whatever. If you don't mind it being displayed have it going across your forearms, or down your ribs.

mystery tattoo ideas?

Q. I have wanted for a long time to get a tattoo that embodies my mysterious nature. I'm pretty set on getting some kind of phrase, written on my side torso, but I have no idea what I want it to say. Everything I come up with I think doesn't work for whatever reason. For example my grandma used to call me Mystery Woman, but as a tattoo I feel like that would kind of look retarded, same with getting one that flat out says "Mystery".. lol. I've thought of getting something like "the more you know the less you know" but still not totally happy with that or any of the other phrases I've come up with.. any ideas?

What does getting a tattoo feel like?

Don't know what the pain will be like? Guess what, we wrote multiple articles on that too! We wrote one article called "Do Tattoos Hurt and How Will It Feel? Women Feel Less Pain Then Men?". Being a female is actually a plus because you might feel less pain. The pain will vary by person and how much each person can tolerate it. Also depends on what type of equipment the tattoo artists uses. If they use equipment with fewer needles, then obviously you will feel less pain. Tattoos in areas with softer skin will have more pain then others. Tattoo artists and surveys will show that women tolerate the pain more then men for some reason.
We also attached an image in the blog post that shows the amount of pain each part of the body hurts the most and what hurts the least. So you could look at the image and see what part hurts the least and get a tattoo there!

How do I write the word vegetarian in Elven?

Q. It's a strange and odd request, but I'm looking to get this word (or something close to it) tattooed on me. I've been a vegetarian for 22 years now (my entire life), and a huge fan of Tolken. So, if anyone can help me out, it'd be fantastic.

I would love to know how often she has to get that tattoo touched up, finger tattoos especially on the side or underneath fade and blur horribly due to constant wear and tear. I guarantee she (and the two other celebrities with the exact same tattoo) will end up having it removed by laser surgery because the letters are so small, there's no way it will last long all factors considered. Not just this, but short of wearing gloves you will have no way to cover the tattoo, and you'll find that a great deal of employers will not consider employing you with such a tattoo. Even if you're in a career now in which it's acceptible, remember there is no such thing particularly in the current climate as job security. There are a huge number of areas on your body to play around with but honestly that's one I'd leave alone.

A. Get an old school font - but make sure the font isn't to boldface or chunky. It has to be graceful and unique in order to grace a woman's frame.

A. I think the question you really want an answer to is, What will your parents do? People on Yahoo can't answer that question. You can usually get an idea to that answer by feeling your parents out in a conversation. Casually, tell them about a friend, who recently got a tatoo, that you think looks cool and see what they say. Or go with somebody, that you heard is getting a tatoo and tell your parents about the experience, as a passing story. Sort of work it into the conversation smoothly. They will probably ask you if you are thinking about getting a tatoo and you can Say, "maybe, someday, I've thought about it". Their reaction will tell you what they will do, before you actually get the tatoo. Both of my older kids got tatoos. I'm not real happy about their decisions, but I never gave them a hard time about it. The only reason it bothered me, was the fact that they got them in places where it's hard to cover up (forearms for my son and upper back for my daughter). You have to think about your future and how your artwork will look during an interview. Tatoos on the neck, hands and lower arms, aren't the greatest places for professionals to have. For a woman the upper back isn't always the greatest if they have to wear a nice dress for some function. Maybe you will never have a job like that, but you should always look your best in a job interview, even if the job doesn't require much contact with the public. It doesn't mean your tatoos will keep you from getting a good job, but why affect your chances when you can get tatoos in so many places. You don't have to break certain lines, such as the collar line or the short sleeve shirt line. These are things that parents think about. My younger son will want one some day. I tell him to wear a short sleeve dress shirt or a nice polo shirt to the tatoo place. When they apply the stencil transfer, you can see if the tatoo will stick out, then you can get it somewhere else. That's all I ask. He understands this. His half brother regrets his tatoo that goes up to the back of his neck. He can tell when he goes to interviews, that people keep looking at it. I'm glad my younger boy understands this fact.

Don't know what the pain will be like? Guess what, we wrote multiple articles on that too! We wrote one article called "Do Tattoos Hurt and How Will It Feel? Women Feel Less Pain Then Men?". Being a female is actually a plus because you might feel less pain. The pain will vary by person and how much each person can tolerate it. Also depends on what type of equipment the tattoo artists uses. If they use equipment with fewer needles, then obviously you will feel less pain. Tattoos in areas with softer skin will have more pain then others. Tattoo artists and surveys will show that women tolerate the pain more then men for some reason.
We also attached an image in the blog post that shows the amount of pain each part of the body hurts the most and what hurts the least. So you could look at the image and see what part hurts the least and get a tattoo there!

How do I write the word vegetarian in Elven?

Q. It's a strange and odd request, but I'm looking to get this word (or something close to it) tattooed on me. I've been a vegetarian for 22 years now (my entire life), and a huge fan of Tolken. So, if anyone can help me out, it'd be fantastic.

A. Due to the incompleteness of Tolkien's Elven languages I recommend to use a simple transcription of the English word to Tengwar (one of his scripts).

Q. My grandma (old old old fashioned) told me when she was growing up, only prostitutes got tattoos. Is this true?
She said that's how pimps marked their prostitutes.
Could it be that in certain cultures, this was the case?

A. After researching, some sources indicate that that was indeed the case! But obviously, there's other sources out there and when talking about history, there's always many other sides to an argument.

I found this link, which basically talks about tattoos & women. If you scroll down, you can see that it says this: " America, during the 30s, a psychiatrist and writer by the name of Albert Parry wrote about and spread the idea of deviance in correlation to tattoos. Parry especially shined a negative light on women, who possess tattoos, by giving them the stigma of "abnormal and accessible commodities". He also preached the idea that mostly prostitutes were the ones to get tattoos and he "relished the stereotype of tattooing as a perverse and deviant activity."

what would be a good tattoo mural to symbolize motherhood?

Q. I want to get a mural tattooed on my back that will represent the change from childhood to motherhood. I know that i want it to be gray scaled and that I don't want the usual faeries, butterfly's, frogs or flowers but im not very creative and the artist needs a general idea that i want to display any ideas?

A. Take images from your childhood, a picture of you on a swing or slide, in diapers, being held, sleeping, different ages, toys and books, and the things that you were interested in at different stages, objects to represent time periods and ages, silhouettes, etc. Look in scrapebooks, and bring any and all pictures, and written ideas to your artist and see what him/her comes up with.
