Q. My Husband went to MEPS today to enlist in Marine Corps. He has a tattoo that touches his collarbone only a little bit. They didn't disqualify him or at least not yet, they just took a bunch of pics of it and are going to send the pics somewhere to get approved. He wasn't able to swear in yet because of this. Instead he now has to go home and write a paper on what the meaning of the tattoo is and why he should still be able to enlist...This all really makes me mad. Does Army have strict rules like this? Will he probably still be able to get in? his tattoo has no vulgar meaning and it is not gang affiliated..
A. The regs on tattoo's typically change 2 or 3 times a year because nobody can ever agree. The military does have pretty strict rules on tattoo's though. A friend of my husbands tried to enlist and was flat out rejected because of his tattoo on his collar bone, even though it's nothing offensive. Some people have been denied because they have naked women, but are accepted once they're covered up in bathing suits.
The current USMC tattoo policy states no head or neck tattoo's, no sleeves that are seen below the cuff of PT shirt or tattoo's (or collection of tattoo's) that completely cover arms or legs. No tattoo that is sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-american, anti-social, gang related, or extremest group or organization related.
You have to abide by MEPS rules for now because he has to pass them before even being regulated by USMC regs.
The army regs are no, head, neck or face tattoo's above uniform (Class A shirt) collar, no offensive tats ANYWHERE on the body.
Essentially, the last authority on tats is MEPS, so regardless of which branch he goes into, he needs to play MEPS rules.

I also want to get in script "Love conquers all" across my chest
and I sunflower type thing on my foot.
I love tattoos and I have a high tolerance for pain.
The pain isn't an issue.

A. If you like the cherry tree, get it. It IS beautiful, though, as someone else has said, not very original. But then again, what IS original in tattoos? I've seen pics of everything from cat butts to dandelions to electricity posts and umbrellas.
What I wanna advise you AGAINST is the chest tattoo. I love tattoos, but NOT those. I feel that one of the best parts about a woman's body is her silky smooth chest and clavicle area. Don't ruin that natural beauty with some lame quote. Yes, everything HAS been done already but that "Love conquers all" thing... that's just TOO MUCH cliche. Almost as bad as the "girlfriend-boyfriend name" tattoo and the rose and the anchor. Quotes about love.
But hey, if you INSIST on getting that quote, at least do it somewhere else. Don't ruin your pretty chest with it.
