Looking for a personal review or reference for a tattoo artist in Seattle, WA?

Q. I am taking a trip to Seattle over the new year, and I'm hoping to get a tattoo while I'm there.
I've already done some research on Google, and so far I'm leaning towards Stephanie at Madame Lazonga Tattoo.
Does anyone have a personal reference or review from a tattoo artist in Seattle?

As I said, I've already done some research, I'm looking for personal experience.
Looking for a reference for ANY tattoo artist, not necessarily limited to Stephanie at Madame Lazonga Tattoo.

A. Hello --- i go to Magenta at Diamond Tattoo in Kent. Here is a video of the tattoos she
has done. The leg one is a cover up and it's now 4 days old. There is more to go as after
4 plus hours the skin said no more and we had to give it a rest until later, so the highlights
and color are still to be put in. Hopefully you are going before the 12th of January as she
will be out here in florida to do the all women artists tattoo convention.

Hope this is a help.

Help! I am getting my first tattoo tomorrow?
Q. So I am getting my first tattoo tomorrow, its of a dove on my left wrist. It's gonna be almost two inches long. I have been to the tattoo shop 2 times. First time was to just check it out and I liked what I saw so I made the appointment. BUT it being my first time even being in a tattoo shop I didn't ask the right questions. The woman at the front desk, I assumed was a tattoo artist and I thought she was gonna be the one to tattoo me because she kept saying "I" when referring to being available to make an appointment. And silly me, I didn't ask her to explain. I didn't ask the right questions about who is going to tattoo me. All we talked about was the tattoo I wanted and how much it will hurt. So she told me the next day SHE was available from 6-8 and if I wanted I could come in and get it done. So I made the appointment for 7 thinking she was going to be the one to do my tattoo (I wanted her too because I felt very comfortable with her) and she told me that if i decided to come a little before 7 that would be okay too. She tells me the tattoo will be somewhere between $100-115 and that I need to put a $80 deposit down. So I did and the next day I came in with my dad at 6, I had free time so I thought I would come in early and she did say I could come in early and they had nothing booked. So I walk in and I start talking to her (she was eating) and I asked if she would be available soon and I said sorry about being early. She tells me that the guy is just finishing up doing a tattoo and that he needs to clean up and eat so I'll have to wait about 45 minutes. Of course I was soo confused because I thought she was going to be doing it. She tells me the guy doing my tattoo is a guest artist and shows me his work. He's pretty good but I was still a little disappointed. I didn't want to wait around for 45 minutes and I was a little bummed out so I changed the appointment for tomorrow at 5. I asked her who will be doing it and she says the guest artist. I was disappointed but I just kept telling myself that his work is good so my tattoo will come out nice.

So I have a few questions. I know I should of asked her but stupid me I didn't.

1. Is the $80 deposit included with the price of the tattoo? or do I still have to pay the full price?
2. Is $100-115 a lot to spend on a small tattoo (an inch and a half long to 2 inches long?)
3. How much of a tip do I leave? 10%?
4. Are they over charging me? From what I read, most places don't ask you to put a 80 dollar deposit down and people have gotten small tattoos for as little as 40 dollars.

A. The deposit in every shop that I have seen gets factored into the price of the tattoo so depending on how much they end up charging in the end (whether it be the 100 or the 115) make sure you bring enough to cover the amount that goes above the initial $80. Keep in mind many states also will add on sales tax to the price at the end. Also, make sure you bring a bit extra, not only for the tip but also if the artist declares a different price. It can happen when there is an appointment set by someone other than the artist, he may not agree with the quote she gave you. If the tattoo takes about an hour or so to finish then I would say the price is par for the course based on the shops I've worked in both in Pittsburgh and Seattle, if it is under an hour then yes that sounds a bit high for something small on the wrist like that. Normally shops have a stated minimum as well which might have been good to find out while shopping around. Tipping is really an individual thing and based on how well stuff is done but it isn't that much different between that and tipping say a server in a restaurant. Tips range anywhere from 10% to 20 some odd percent depending on how you feel you were treated as a customer.

You are right, I haven't heard of many places doing an $80 deposit either, they are really in place to make sure the artist receives something for the slot or preparing the artwork if you do not show up and in the shops I worked in it was only about $20 to $50 depending on how much art needed to be done in advance.

It seems a little odd that the person at the counter would speak to you as if they would be doing the work, if they were simply working the counter they shouldn't have cared what time they specifically would have been in the next day unless that was their way of saying his time slot would be open then.

If you are uncomfortable with him doing your tattoo you may be able to get your deposit back and shop around for a different artist but that can be tricky as a lot of places don't allow refunds on the deposit and only apply it to the cost of your tattoo, but that varies from place to place and they may make exceptions.

Best of luck!
