What is your view on women with tattoos?

Q. I work for Raven Tattoo Care, a tattoo aftercare product, and only hear one side of the story, people who have made tattooing their life! Big tattoos on the calves, on the shoulder, the low back - do you think they are pretty and make a girl/woman look more attractive or not? You can guess where I stand on the issue, but I am curious what the general population thinks - does this make you look differently at the person, as if they are lower class/trashy - or do you see it as something beautiful, a work of art, an expression of who the person is? Just interested in opinions.

A. as someone who also works in the business i get to see both opinions, and agree that both are right. There are women out there who are simply trailer trash and have a tramp stamp on their lower back simply to make people look at their ass (in my opinion most v shaped flash tribal down there is simply an arrow). I do see that as an expression of who they are, trashy.

However there are others, myself included, who have a true piece of artwork on their back. The style i have looks like the flowers are airbrushed on and people always want to touch it to see if its actually real or not. Never has anyone called it trashy. i dont see it as a personal expression of anything because i didnt get it to say ive got a tattoo there or even because i like that design more than anything in the world. It was a gift from my mentor and it was more a bonding experience than anything else. i dont think it makes me any different a person than i was before.

How much does a traditional pin up girl tattoo cost?
Q. I am getting ready to get my first tattoo and I have always wanted a traditional style pin up girl like a nurse or a mermaid. I'd prefer to get it on my side or calf. It's going to be 7- 7 1/2 in. In color. Which location do you think would hurt more?

Cheers,

Sam

A. Loaded question. Most artists charge around $150/hr, but will normally quote you on a piece. I've got two tattoos that cost me $150 and took 4-5 hrs (including breaks, etc.) and one that cost $350 (and took about the same amount of time). All depends on the artist and what you want to do. Straight American Traditional, no shading....who knows, but probably would take 2-3 hours tattoo time, depending on the design.

Also, it makes a difference whether you're looking at doing something like this - http://lucky7tattoo.net/uploads/Russell-Fortier-mermaid-pin-up.jpg

Or something like this - http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_KOFmOEXi9B8GB0wj_sPUbL1mDVsz11vQzzfEFXs5qPCis6nVCZS8qjLS2trLRpREwRltpCXqNNWG1iQiYYz_Nfhj8BdUf_7oJla2yiY_Slfbic_Wzopdo7SrXMDoEA_K9qj5EU7ueWM/s400/old+school+tattoo+pin+up+girl.jpg&imgrefurl=http://tattooblogger.blogspot.com/2008/06/preaty-pin-up.html&usg=__XCtdj46SRWODD0DB8T4LskhjcFA=&h=400&w=299&sz=23&hl=en&start=12&tbnid=DxAkZq8IayjuVM:&tbnh=124&tbnw=93&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtattoo%2Bpinup%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1B3GGGL_enUS309US309%26sa%3DG

Shading and detail take a long time and a good artist, but not every artist can do a good American traditional tattoo like the mermaid. Find out what artist(s) specialize in what techniques in your area.

Ribs reputedly hurt a bit more than other areas, but I will say my calf burned like white hot coals as opposed to my shoulder/bicep area. Calves are far from you heart, so much more difficult in healing.

(Edited)...
OMG....have to disagree with the guy below me. I LOVE pinup art. If you have it, women who like it will like you and let me tell you, a lot of hot girls LIKE pinups (and girls). Women are pretty. Why not? Especially if it's "tasteful" (ie ...no boobies without shells or a bikini top, okay???)
