Are women more into tattoos than men?

Q. I notice today that many women have tattoos on their body. It's actually gotten to the point where I think at least 90% of women have tattoos. It's THAT many I see. But with men, not so much. Based on what I see, I would estimate that about 50-60% of men have tattoos.

So, do more women have tattoos than men? I tend to think so because women like to expose their bodies more, so it's only normal that they have more of a desire to decorate it with art. But what do you think?

A. Wow, that's a really sexist statement. I don't know if any actual studies have been done on this. Why does it matter though? Each gender and each person has their own reasons for getting tattooed. I'm a woman and I have two myself. I did not get them because I like to expose my body more. Wow. Just wow. A lot of men like to expose their body as well you know. You see men walking around shirtless --all the time--. Women can't do that.

women with rib tattoos- how does your bra effect your art? and weight gain/boobs growing?
Q. I want a medium sized quote in a pretty font along my ribs. think, megan foxes broken heart tattoo quote, if you know what i mean..
however, what happens when you have to wear bras? all my bras have thick straps, does it effect healing? is it annoying that the bras cover it, should i just start the quote below my bra line?. and is this a spot that in general stretches after pregnancy or does your body change in this area a lot?

A. I have one all down my side and my bra never bothered it. Just don't wear a tight bra. I have had a child since I got this tattoo and it stretched out when I was pregnant but then again so did all of my other tattoos (one on my ankle, one on my hip and one on my back.) But they are all back to normal again and look just fine.

Have young women getting frequently tattooed ruined the art and culture of tattooing?

Q. Im all for womens equal right to get tattooed. This question has nothing to do with whether or not one thinks it is proper or classy/trashy to be tattooed. In fact, I find tattooing on women to be attractive, though thats only one aspect of tattooing. And I highly respect women like Somebody on here, who are very smart about and dedicated to tattooing.

My question is serious not sexist.

Tattooing in Western society has had a culture of its own, and we all know that culture is about MEANING. What does it mean to be tattooed? Why do people get tattooed? My OPINION on the right reasons to get tattooed includes:
--the images being tattooed inspire you
--the images fuel your imagination
--a more recent thing (in the West): love of art and taking that art beyond banal canvases of museums (along with this there is something deep about the permanence of it and the fact that it is on skin, w/ blood, etc)

--to mark affiliation with a group. Affiliation with a group makes people feel like they are a part of something larger than themselves.
--a memorial

Along with these comes a sense of permanence. Permanence reinforces commitment. Finally, I think tattooing has also been resorted to by marginalized/disenfranchised people as a type of property. If nothing else in this world, at least they have their tattoos, which will go with them to their death.

Think for example of sailors who were among the first to popularize getting tattooed. During long shipping voyages in crap conditions, they could use all the inspiration they got. And these people really had no propertyeven the clothes on their backs were often in pawn! If they went overboard, the one thing they would have is their tattoosalso what they look at and dream about during long days away from home.

Now why are trendy people getting tattooed nowadays?
--dangerous factor. People thinks it makes them wild or dangerous in some way. But guess what? It used to be much harder to get tattooed. You had to travel or interact with certain dangerous people to do so. These people were not polite, not there to be nice to you or stand for any of your bullcrap. It sickens me how encouraging people are on this site towards people asking Should I get this tattoo? No! Tattooing is not meant to be as easy to get (even if cheaper than) Starbucks.

In the current atmosphere of Have a nice day, convenience tattooing, any associations of danger are actually removed.

--to symbolize something. This is such a load of b.s. Yes, tattoos do symbolize...they indeed mean something. But there are many different ways of representing or symbolizing. The type of signing that trendy people usually do is not the type of signing common to tattoo culture. It would take a long and complicated discussion to explain this... you either get it or you dont.

--to memorialize. This was the one past (traditional tattoo culture) motivation for tattooing that the trendy people have harped in on and blown all out of proportion. I dont know if its because they see stuff like Miami Ink where everyone (as instructed to them by the shows producers) walks in with some story about how blah blah happened and they need this tattoo of blah blah to represent that.
Trendy people seem to feel the need just to make ANY mark on their bodies to mark that something happened. This shooting star is because my grandma died. Huh?

--anxiousness to be experienced. As teens, most of us felt anxious about losing our virginity. Once you had sex, you joined the ranks of the non-virgin populationthe EXPERIENCED population! A similar process seems to be at work with tattooingpeople are anxious to get MARKED in any way to join this club.

But here is the thing: joining the club isnt meant to be easy. There is inconvenience....pain....stigma....permanence. Inconvenience, Pain, Stigma, Permanencethese are the things that the trendy tattoo people are bent on getting around. Everything (questions on Yahoo Answers, for instance) are driven towards avoiding these obstacles--- BUT THEY ARE THE VERY OBSTACLES that give MEANING to being tattooed, to being in the club!!

In the absense of this meaning (tattoos have become meaningless fashion), the trendy people try to add meaningsymbolism. In real tattoo culture, someone is inspired by something so much that they want it permanently put on their body. In trendy tattooing, people decide first that they need to get tattooed (to become part of the cool, experiened club, to attract people sexually, to work out their psychological issues of things like isolation and poor self image)...and THEN they try to think up a tattoo (usually some banal shape or image inspired by commercial logo-ing/branding) and add to it some stated meaning. Do I need to go any further in explaining how utterly bankrupt this trendy tattoo culture is?

Trendy men and women are equally guilty of lowering the standards of tattoo culture and turning it into cheap branding. But women especially seem significant in this process. Because of the nature of popular womens culture ALONG WITH womens historical relationship to the art of tattooing, they especially have sought to remove the
INCONVENIENCE (Can I pay with my credit card? What brand of lotion should I buy? How many times a day should I rub it in? Let me just get a little star here on the spot today Let me go online and ask...)
PAIN (Where does it hurt least? What creams can I use to reduce to numb it?...)
STIGMA (Stop calling it a tramp stamp I got my tattoos for me, they are mine Why get it in a place where you cant show it off?)
PERMANENCE (How much does tattoo removal cost and does it really work?).

Notice that the vast majority of people asking tattoo questions on this site are women.

What do you think this means? Thanks
I wish I could change the title of this question a bit; It is hard to articulate succintly.

I don't really like the sound of "women ruining" -- it makes it sound like women (of course I only mean certain ones) as the agents....
I think a better way to say it is that tattooing has changed towards ACCOMODATING this class of trendy people--both sexes, but especially to accomodate some of the desires of women, who are a relatively "new" clientele for tattooing.

A. I read all of what you have written, and I agree with most of your major points. I do think tattoos have sort of become a trend, and I know exactly what you mean by "can I pay with a credit card". tattoos are a whole lot easier to get now than they were when sailors were getting them. I do think it's rediculous that people get tattoos in an effort to show that it symbolizes something when really they just got it to be cool. As far as women sort of changing the idea and culture of tattooing... I think this is one of your least valid points. Yes, maybe some things have changed since 1925! But isn't that what ALL cultures do? maybe it sucks every little meaning behind tattoo culture, maybe it's just changing and you don't want to be put into that group of trendy men and women you keep talking about. So in order not to be in it (because obviously your reasons for getting inked are so much better) you criticize it. All I have to say, is that my entire family has gotten inked (except me). Grandparents included. Now THEY got tattoos when they were hard to get! I think tattoos are body art, I think the history is awesome, I think some tattoos are EFFING REDICULOUS (a playboy bunny? what the...?). But overall, tattooing is available, it is growing in popularity, more people want them, more women want them, women generally take better care of themselves (why are you freaking out about the fact that someone asked what kind of lotion to use?). Yes, I think you have valid points. Not every one should get a tattoo. But your whole deal about women and trendy tattoos sort of taking away from the culture... I think your just whining because you don't want the original hardcore tattoo peeps to be thinking that you got your tattoos to be cool and fit in with the growing popularity of it all. hell, if you want to be original, don't get a tattoo.

What do people think of forearm tattoos on women of small quotes?
Q. What are peoples thoughts on women with forearm tattoos for example cher lloyd from x factor.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/x_factor/3127440/Hip-hop-star-Soulja-Boy-Cher-Lloyd-is-tip-top.html

A. I happen to have a forearm tattoo.
It is not words, but is a custom designed and high quality work of art that wraps 3/4th of the way around my forearm with the image on the top, a couple of inches from where my arm bends.
It is very unique and does not look ugly or trashy.
I don't think that you can make blanket statements, like 'all forearm tattoos on women are ugly' with any kind of accuracy.

All tattoos are not the same. All women are not the same. How my tattoo looks on me, has nothing to do with how Cher Lloyd's tattoo looks on her.

Basically, you are going to get 2 kinds of answers - negative from people who do not like tattoos or are judgmental based on stereotypes. Or people who are fine with tattoos, who don't judge by whether you are male or female, or have a tattoo or not, or if you have one where it is located.

If you don't like them, don't get them, and keep your opinions focused on who you are instead of making blanket statements like this.

luck~

why is it socially less acceptable for women to have a tattoo?

Q. I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for a while now and I really want something feminine and small. But I've been scared to get one, because I don't want people to suddenly not take me seriously - like a future boyfriend. I want to place it somewhere where i can hide it if I want to, because I really like the idea of having a little secret... so i guess I'm asking for your oppinion on tattoos and any experience you've had with people judging you by it and discriminating. Cheers.

A. From my point of view there is nothing wrong with tattoos. If your body is a temple you should be able to paint the walls how you want. I find women with tattoos to be pretty sexy actually but they're not for everyone.

The people that look down on women with tattoos are the ones with the deepest problems, I've known guys with tats that didn't like chicks with tats. You try to make sense out of that!

Basically I think it still goes back to a closed mindedness of women can't do certain things men can and tattoos aren't very "Lady-like". That you should be prim and proper, (Or barefoot and pregnant!LOL!) Don't let it bother you, a person is smart but people as a whole are idiots.

It's one of the oldest forms of art, and if you get one (Or have them) you should be proud.

What do you think about woman with tatoos?
Q. Is it an art? How do you explain this kind of art and whats the beauty behind it?

A. How does the gender of the person dictate whether or not a tattoo is art and/or beautiful?

I think the best way to explain my feelings about tattoos is to compare them to graffiti: small pieces are generally not great looking but they can have their moments if they're well-placed or convey a meaning perfectly. Larger pieces, although still dependent on a high level of skill in their execution, generally look better.

Of course the problem is how does one define 'art'. A lot of people would argue that something doesn't count as 'art' simply because they personally do not find it aesthetically pleasing, which is an incredibly arrogant notion. The best definition I can come up with is that art is the arrangement of any medium (with any level of control) with the intent of creating a piece which provokes an emotion. (If anyone has a better or more concise definition I'd love to hear it.)

Working from my definition one could argue that smaller pieces do not necessarily constitute art, they are, like tags in graffiti or cave paintings, a marking which conveys information. It may be aesthetically pleasing and/or stir someones emotions, but the primary intention was the documenting of information and I think intent is what art boils down to.

My wife has her sleeves done, I couldn't be happier.

What can you tell about a woman who wears a flower tattoo on her upper right shoulder blade ?

Q. O.K. I recently had a falling out with a woman who always refered to me as her best friend. I caught her in tons of lies during our ,so-called, friendship and the rest of the time she just baffled me with her evasive personality and quirks. She had the most amazing flower tattoo (I think it was supposed to be an Iris or Orchid ) on her upper right shoulder blade.
I see in various magazines that alot of attention has been given to tattoos ,their art and body location and what they can tell about the person.
Any one have some thoughts on what I didn't know about my ex friend based on her tattoo ??
By the way I'm still crazy ,mad in love with her. I suppose my tattoo should be "Fool 4 love" across my forehead.

A. It means she likes flowers. And tattoos. Ta-da!!! Magic.

Is it possible to learn to surpress emotions for women?
Q. Basically I'm women illiterate. I'm prone for doing and saying the wrong things when it comes to women. I can't maintain a relationship for more than a month because they all say I look and dress very attractive but talk and act lame & stupid . In all my 22 years this has been an endless cycle. I wanna learn to surpress all emotional ties towards women. I just wanna focus on my other passions in life such as tattooing art and psychology and not be stressed out about my deficiencies in this subject. I wanna learn to reject a pretty women so I don't end up disappointed. So far it's allot easier said than done (sigh) its like dangling a hot & crispy piece of bacon in front of a starving chained up dog. Does anyone out there know how to suppress their emotions? If so how do u do it?

A. .If your relationships only last a month. Then you have an even more serious problem.Perhaps you need to search your soul,to find out why you see women as lesser individuals than you

What are discriminations that a woman that has full body tattoos goes thru?

Q. im doing something on stereotyping for a specific group of people and i decided to do it on women that are fully tattooed because i believe some actual live a normalish life. i just want feed back thanks!
not just full body tattoos maybe just plenty of visible tattoos....

A. i am a chica with a full back piece that's obviously visible during summer months due to me wearing tank tops, etc... i also have a few small visible tattoos on my arms/hands.

i also am a mother.

i get weird looks all the time, but more so i am surprised at the amount of compliments/questions i get from people who you would never think were interested.

i feel sometimes people may find me intimidating, uneducated, or just a wild child due to my tattoos... add some brightly colored hair to the mix (like i used to have.. hehe) and the scowls are even more frequent. i am, of course, none of the above... just someone who likes "skin art"... as in all walks of life, from the cute un-tattooed girl who drives the escalade, to the fully tattooed dude on a motorcycle, there will always be stereotypes.

How do I explain to these older men to stop bashing this woman with tattoos?
Q. I, myself, have several tattoos, and I'm quite offended when they are (behind this woman's back) bashing her for having a sleeve. Personally, I love it. I think it's amazing and great art work.

How do I explain to them that times have changed?

A. Yeah, you know what? I had to come down hard on the wife the other day. She was all making fun of Amy's (she's my GF! She's, umm, a couple years younger and stuff) tramp stamp, as she called it, and I said, HEY! Why do you have to go getting all bizzitchy about Amy when you are so lame in bed? Amy knows how to rock the springs!! And then she gave me this look like she was gonna kill me so I kind of took off running. That was last night and I haven't been home since. So it isn't just older men making nasty comments about tats. Just hope Amy doesn't find out I'm homeless now.

What is the underlying psychology behind the desire to get tattoo's?

Q. As tattoo's are painful, a little risky, and more or less permanent, I suspect there is some sort of insecurity/attention seeking psychology at work. What are your thoughts?

A. It's a matter of identification with a tribal mindset. Tattoo's have been with us forever it seems.
Right now it is a fad to extremes. It is cheaper and more efficient than in the past and the culture in society has opened the door to women as well. Although the art is very popular today I can't see it going on for more than a decade before the novelty of it all wears thin.
Too bad for the ones who mark their flesh these days. Many of them will regret it in their older years and some will pay a lot of money to get rid of them.
The problem is that the red ink used in tattooing cannot be eradicated without taking the flesh off. The rest of the inks can be laser cleaned.
