Is it really that trashy for a successful young woman to get a tattoo on her shoulder?

Q. Since I was a little girl, I've always wanted to get a tattoo of a phoenix on my back. My life plan has always been to become a novelist and write fantasy literature. Well, I just graduated college and am working on my second book. As a graduation/birthday gift, my step-dad decided to help me track down the best tattoo artist within driving distance and help me with the cost (he's chipped $200, which should be 1/3-1/2 of the final total).

I had to schedule out 6 months, and tomorrow is the big day. Despite my step-dad's support, my mom and sisters are being really mean to me about this decision. Calling it "trashy," and "the biggest mistake of your life," lecturing me left and right, telling me that I'm never gonna be able to find a "decent" guy or be able to come around "respectable" company wearing anything other than a turtle neck.

I'm perfectly set in my decision (I have the $600 cash in my wallet right now and a full tank of gas). But does anyone have good reasons to tell them to shove it, or are their arguments legitimate? I think they are full of crap personally, because I just graduated from private school, and more than half of my female classmates at banquet had tattoos that were visible in ball gowns. But perhaps I'm biased because I want this so bad and I hang with an artsy crowd...

A. Ok don't listen to your close minded mother and sisters

For me, I would pick a girl WITH tattoos over a girl without them any day

Just because your mom and sisters are living in the old days where they can't look past any of this doesn't mean you should.

Tattoos are amazing and make girls beautiful. It is not in the least bit trashy.

This is YOUR life NOT theirs
This is YOUR decision NOT theirs

If they can't respect your own decisions since you obviously are doing good especially graduating from college than they should just keep their mouth shut. You shouldn't have to explain or convince them of anything. They don't have a say in what you can or can't do with your body

For a woman how painful is it to get a tattoo on your lower shoulder?
Q.

A. The more flesh an area has, the less painful it tends to be. So on a scale of 1-10, a lower shoulder tattoo would probably be a 6-7
