Q. I've been considering a tattoo for quite a while now and the best place to get one to where it can be hidden easily and not stretch to drastically is my rib cage. I plan on getting a small quote starting around my bra line and stopping at about the end of my rib cage. Based on personal experiences will this be a good area for a tattoo. I'm not getting it to show off to the entire world, it's more for myself but I still don't want it to look terrible 20 years from now. Are there any other concerns I should consider or other places you would suggest?

A. It's a bit painful but you should go for it.

Are rib tattoos sexy or trashy on women?

Q. I want to get a running quote on my ribs, just a short one, because your lungs are so essential to running which is a big part of my life. I love how it would look, but I don't want to look trashy...any thoughts? from guys and mothers especially please!:)

Q. So I really want a tattoo on my ribs. It will be my first tattoo and I'm kind of nervous. I know what I really want so despite how much people says it hurts I will still end up getting it. What I want to know is personal stories of WOMEN who have gotten their ribs tattooed and how it feels to them. I am a larger girl so I do have body fat... does anyone think that that will help cushion the blow? ha ha I just want to kind of have an idea of what to expect.


just so you know I am planning on getting a tree with a quote from a french philosopher that says out of difficulties grows miracles. that really means a lot to my family life and i thought it was kind of clever tieing in the growing with the tree. How long do you think this will take... all in black and white no color.

A. having body fat will not cushion the blow, it may in fact intensify the pain. As far as the pain level in concerned...it is right up there with the most painful places to get done. Women handle rib pieces 10 times better than men. We are simply built different and we are built to tolerate pain in a different Fashion. Is it going to hurt? Yes! will it hurt bad? Yes! Is it unbearable....NO!

It sucks, its tender and I find the tattoos I have gotten while I am larger weight wise all hurt far worse than when I was thin. If this is something you want, get it. You can handle it!!! Since your getting it in black and grey, it will hurt less because there will be less blending of colors which is the more painful part!

I cant help you with price because I dont know the size you are getting it and the size determines the cost. Your looking to spend a decent amount if the piece will be large...$300-$400 maybe.

I want a small tattoo but my boyfriend of 2 years doesn't want me to get it. Advice?

Its ur body, ur temple, u are not his property, get a tattoo if you want one, my ex demanded that i do not get any and well i have to full arms, chest, ribs, and thighs done, and i love it, but a little advice, it hurts like a m#$#%% b$#%% on the ribs, unless you can take pain, go ahead, some men don't like women with tattoos, sure once he realizes it will be hidden, he would be fine. ur choice, good luck!

A. Honestly a place like your wrist or your calf is much better. You don't want it to come off like a tramp stamp and end up regretting it.

If i get a tattoo on my rib cage , will it be affected in the future when i become pregnant ?

When i become pregnant , and get bigg , then small again ,what normally happens ?

A. Any body can be toned back into shape after a pregnancy. I'm sure you've seen imagery out there of women in their 50's that have the bodies of 20 year olds. Haha, as far as tattoos are concerned, depending on *where* you get it on your ribs, you may or may not have problems. (I digress; eventually, a text tattoo will get "old" looking, so you'll need to get it touched up eventually... but that's whether you're pregnant or not).

If your pregnancy does effect it, it would likely stretch the lettering out and make it... "thicker", I guess is the only way I can describe it. Cocoa butter rubbed on your skin on a daily basis will make it easier for the skin to maintain elasticity and it'll help the skin go back to its... "original" pliability after the pregnancy. Of course, you will have to get back to your original weight after having a baby, which for some women, is never an easy task.

I'm trying to say, it doesn't have to turn into an unsightly mess if you don't want it to or if you don't allow it to happen. But you're going to have to work for that result.

Is there any other places that you may know of but for a better starting price ? I want to get some words on my ribs . But I want to find an artist who can do any font size , the last three ppl I asked said they cant do words only in large size .. That to me is BS ...So if you know of anyone or any shops in the east bay area ca that do an awesome job on whatever you ask for and great starting price please let me know .Thank you for you help too :)

A. The reality of it is not bs. Lettering should be a certain size so it can be legible and stand the test of time. Anything smaller won't look good after a couple of years. The fact that it's on the ribs creates another difficulty factor resulting in putting a bigger font size there. The ribs suck, they hurt like a bastard and they are difficult to tattoo their. Their is a popular trend right now of people (usually women) getting their first tattoo of a quote on the ribs in the smallest font possible. Those three elements raise the bar for difficulty. There literally is no room for error. People don't sit well for rib tattoos, they squirm and not to mention they breathe making your steady hand not so steady. My advice is to go with a bigger font, it will look better 10 years from now rather than a tiny font that will look like bs in a couple.

Are rib cage tattoos the new tramp stamps?

Q. They're becoming very popular among young women and seem like an excuse to lift your shirt and show off.
I'm not saying it makes a person trashy. I mean it just seems like the"in" thing these days, as lower back tattoos aka "tramp stamps" were when I was a teen. What makes the rib cage more meaningful than another body part and why are they so much more common now than ever before?

A. Personally, I think that having tattoos on the rib cage is a beautiful spot. Just because it's common among girls of a possible stereotype doesn't mean it's become "trashy" to get a quote or something in this area. Yes, showing off the tattoo will require you to lift your shirt. But the placement could also be very meaningful. If you'd like a tattoo that you don't WANT to show off to the world, the rib cage is a good place to put it.

Many people who modify their bodies do it simply for themselves. Whether the world is impressed or displeased is a secondary concern. I think that you should only get tattooed if it's something meaningful or personal to yourself - as all of my tattoos are.

So I don't at all think any tattoo PLACEMENT is trashy. The only thing that can make a tattoo "trashy" is if it's a profane, meaningless, or ridiculous piece of work.
